Ray's for Today offers the rigorous and uncompromising content of the original Ray's New Arithmetic series in an updated format. It recreates the classical teaching in an age-appropriate and contemporary manner while still keeping the emphasis on oral language, mental math, and math reasoning.

Ray's for Today Features:

  • Principle Approach – It teaches arithmetic in an orderly, systematic fashion, starting with the basic rules and principles drawn from the order and consistency observed in creation.

  • Concept Building – The lessons build knowledge and understanding side-by-side, piece-by-piece to form a firm foundation for more in-depth math skills. Instead of a survey approach that skims the surface, students gain a thorough understanding of how the skills work and why, leading students from the simple to the complex.

  • Integrative Learning – The lessons are presented in the everyday language children already know. At first the skills are practiced orally with the instructor so students know what is being described and how to do it. The conversational approach continues as students become readers, and are guided in becoming self-learners.

  • Discovery Activities – Students get to see for themselves through hands-on activities and visual "walk-throughs" that our number system makes sense. By beginning with concrete, real-life examples (the manipulative stage), students then form mental pictures of the skills (mental image stage), that can be hooked to the abstract concepts (abstract stage) to cement learning long after the rote steps have been forgotten.

  • Real-Life Problem-Solving – Students learn how to translate every day words into math sentences and symbols from the very beginning. As they venture into more abstract math concepts, they are supported by real-life story problems that help cement the connections. Problem-solving is presented in context, right along with the rules and principles, so that story problems don't have to be dreaded. Students get plenty of practice with simple, straight-forward storylines, and build their thinking skills step-by-step with the aid of thorough explanations, visuals, and models. Before they know it, they are solving in-depth and challenging arithmetic problems with all types of numbers. This emphasis on story problems develops math reasoning skills, guiding students in how to think through any situation.

  • Skill Based – The lessons use a variety of methods to cement learning across the three stages of exposure, practice, and mastery. The lessons are flexible  enough to accommodate different learning styles, allowing the instructor to adjust the pace to fit the student's needs. Our goal is not to rush through a hodge-podge of information, but to enable students to grasp the essential skills needed for subsequent levels. We want every student to have that "a-ha moment" when they get math and see why it works.

  • Leveled Learning – The lessons focus on age-appropriate cognitive (mental) development. Each level targets three to four essential skills, guiding students through a thorough understanding of our number system. These essential skills are reviewed across several levels, with more detail added with each level. New skills are hooked to previously learned material in a systematic way, helping students get the "big picture" of our number system. Supplemental skills are also covered to fill out the scope & sequence.

  
Eight Levels are planned for grades 1 through 8. Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are available now. Level 7 is scheduled for release in 2020. Level 8 is scheduled for release in 2021.
  
Each level includes a Student Text and the Instructor's Manual. The Student Text contains the teaching presentation in conversational form. In the primary levels, the parent/teacher reads the lesson along with the child and guides the child's use of the manipulatives and visuals.
   
The Instructor's Manual explains how to use the program, has background information for each unit, teaching guidelines for each lesson, developmental benchmarks, learning style tips, and answer key. The appendix includes a readiness test (grades 2+), the previous level benchmarks, the current level scope and sequence plus benchmarks, summer extension tips, additional cement mixers (mental math), and any manipulatives, game formats, and visuals that are needed for the lessons. Parents have permission to copy these for their own use.
   
The two books come shrink-wrapped and three-hole punched. Customers have the option of using their own binders or they can purchase binders from us (sold separately). The covers can be slipped into the cover of the binders. This keeps costs down to make this one of the most affordable, full-fledged curriculum programs on the market. It also gives the parent/teacher several options for pulling out individual sheets for the daily lesson or giving the student his/her own notebook.
