Whereas phonics decodes or breaks down the sounds of our language into the letter codes, spelling encodes or puts together the sounds and letters together to form words.  Spell checkers only check for words that do not exist. The ability to communicate effectively means being able to choose the precise word and spell it correctly. Spelling is as important to literacy as the ability to sound out words.
